What is Dungeons & Dragons?
Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) is a pencil and paper based roleplaying game published by Wizards of the Coast. Originally published in 1974, the game is currently in its 5th Edition.
Dungeons & Dragons is about storytelling in worlds of swords and sorcery, driven by your imagination. It’s about picturing a crumbling castle in a dark forest and imagining how a fantasy adventurer might react to the challenges that scene presents.
The rules of D&D provide a structure to the adventures that your characters have. Players roll dice to determine whether they succeed in the actions they want to take whether that’s attacking monsters, scaling a cliff, or dodging a magical lightning bolt.
These give players enough information on how to create characters and play games of D&D, with the official rulebooks and starter sets expanding on those further.
At Tabletop Scotland, the vast majority of D&D games we have on offer are suitable for all ages and all experiences. Whether you’ve never played, play regularly or haven’t played for years, we have something for you.
What is the Adventurers League?
The D&D Adventurers League is an ‘organised play’ system managed by the publishers of D&D.
This style of play enables players to play in shared series of adventures whether they are playing at home, in game stores, or at conventions. Your characters can take part in Adventurers League games across the world.
Adventurers League scenarios are ‘tiered’ by character level as shown in the infographic below. Players can start at either 1st Level (Tier 1) or 5th Level (Tier 2) by following the appropriate guidelines on the D&D AL website.
D&D Epics are specific events for the D&D Adventurers League.
EPIC adventures involve multiple tables all playing the same adventure simultaneously, with everyone working to achieve an epic goal. Situations that arise on one table can cause effects on those playing at other tables.
Tabletop Scotland have hosted EPICs at each of our previous conventions and they are extremely popular.
In 2024 we have THREE Epics planned. Find out more about them below.
